The Battalion were looking to advance to the finals for the first time in their history on Thursday night. Kingston was trying to avoid another playoff disappointment. The game originally started Wednesday night but was called after 2 innings due to rain.
Josh Soffer, on only 1 day rest, took the bump for the Battalion trying to lead them to the finals.
Unlike the 1-0 win on Tuesday, the offense carried the load for the Battalion.
After Soffer held the Ponies in the 1st, the Battalion were able to get a 2 out rally going that resulted in an RBI infield single by Matt MacIntyre. After the 1st, it was 1-0 Battalion.
In the top of the 3rd, the Ponies finally broke Soffer’s 16 inning playoff scoreless streak. Derek Mack was able to connect for a 2 run home run that put the Ponies up 2-1.
The Battalion answered right back with a big inning. Steve Renaud led off the inning with a walk before advancing to 3rd on an Alex Baldock single. Wil McIntyre then cashed him with an RBI single to tie the game. Musashi Takara was then able to score McIntyre with a 2 out single. The very next pitch was driven up the middle for an RBI single by Ryan Dillon. After 3, it was 4-2 Battalion.
The Ponies threatened again in the top of the 4th. They had runners on 1st and 3rd with 2outs with MVP candidate Jeff Skelhorne-Gross coming to the plate. He was able to connect on a line drive down the 3rd base line but Kyle Craig was able to dive, get up and fire to 2nd where Takara made a short hop scoop to get the runner just in time.
Now with all the momentum, the Battalion broke it opne in the 4th with another 3 run inning. McIntyre got his 3rd hit of the game, this time a 2 RBI double. He then scored on a MacIntyre double.
The 3-4-5 hitters of Baldock, McIntyre, and MacIntyre went a combined 10-for-11 with 4 doubles and 7 RBIs.
The Battalion put it completely out of reach in the 5th with 5 runs.
Brent Daviault took the hill to finish out the game and was able to throw a scoreless inning.
The Battalion have now outscored opponents 30-4 in the playoffs.
The win sends the Battalion to the finals for the 1st time where they face the Nepean Brewers.
